Join the DEI Office of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC), Dr. Heather Butts, and the African, Black, and Caribbean Employee Resource Group (ABC ERG) as we honor Black History Month with a thought-provoking lecture and discussion titled, 'Untold Stories in Health Equity.'
Untold Stories is a course taught by Prof. Heather Butts at the Columbia Mailman School that introduces students to health leaders of color whose impact is largely absent from history books. From African American physicians whose work has gone unnoticed, to individuals whose contributions have been overlooked, to policymakers whose legacy has yet to be written, the course in the Department of Health Policy and Management will review these unsung heroes, their impact, the discrimination and structural racism they faced, and the work they left behind.
This talk will look at the overall lens of health and public health, focusing on issues in the realm of cancer and cancer research, history of medicine, pioneering champions, and unknow healthcare professionals. Individuals such as Dr. Virginia Alexander, Henrietta Lacks, Dr. Alexander Thomas Augusta, Dr. Jane Cook Wright and many others will be explored, and participants will have the chance to workshop others during the session.
Dr. Butts will shed light on pivotal, often-overlooked contributions to health policy, cancer prevention, and treatment in Black communities. The event will include:
Keynote Lecture (3:00-4:00 p.m.): Exploring untold stories of health equity and their lasting impact by Dr. Butts.
Fireside Chat (4:00-4:30 p.m.): A dynamic conversation led by Dr. Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir.
Networking Reception (4:30-5:30 p.m.): Connect over soul food-inspired small bites and engage in meaningful discussions.
Attendees will also have opportunities to ask questions during the Fireside Chat session and participate in raffles and giveaways.
